The Whistler On DVD

The Whistler

Sometimes referred to as "radio's master of mystery," the radio series was heard over the CBS radio network from 05/16/42 to 09/08/55.  Bill Foreman was The Whistler in the radio series.  To see the audio CD's from this series that are available, click here: The Whistler.

This is the first of eight feature films in the series.  Released on 03/30/1944, the story line is that rich industrialist Earl C. Conrad (played by Richard Dix) is despondent over the drowning death of his wife in the Pacific Ocean while on vacation three years earlier.  He wants to die, but is unable to commit suicide.  He hires a man, Lefty Vigran (played by Don Costello) in a meeting at The Crow's Nest, to get the job done for $10,000.00.  Lefty hires a professional killer played by J. Carrol Naish who agrees to make the hit.  Shortly after this business arrangement is made, the police shoot and kill Lefty who is wanted in the murder of a policeman.  Meanwhile, Earl Conrad learns from his secretary Alice Walker (played by Gloria Stuart), that a telegram she has received states that his wife is not dead, but alive and being held a prisoner by the Japanese on the island of Osaki.  She is to be on the next repatriation ship, the Swedish steamship Soddenhahn.  He must now avoid the killer since he doesn't know who has been hired to kill him.

The film plays well considering that it was shot on a budget of just $75,000.00.  Look for the uncredited screen appearance of Cy Kendall (radio star) as the bartender Gus.  Several other radio types are not credited for this production, such as Wilbur Hatch for the music.  Also not credited is the voice of The Whistler, Otto Forrest.  The story line is by J. Donald Wilson, suggested by the radio program.  The film was directed by William Castle.
