Radio Broadcast Log Of:
Academy Award

On the air for only one season, this series dramatized many stories taken directly from the movies.  Original film stars were used whenever possible.  Each story that was broadcast, or the stars heard, had been nominated or had won an academy award.  The average appearance fee for the stars was $4,000.00 and the sponsors of this series also paid the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences an additional $1,600.00 to use the name.  After 39 broadcasts, and costs of production, the series left the air permanently.

Sponsor background information.
Edward Robinson Squibb founded the Brooklyn, New York based pharmaceutical company in 1856.  In 1895 most of the management responsibilities were turned over to his sons, Charles and Edward and the company became known as E.R. Squibb & Sons.  After Edward Squibb’s death in 1900, the sons, in turn, sold the company in 1905 to Lowell M. Palmer and Theodore Weicker.
William McLaren Bristol and John Ripley Myers purchased Clinton Pharmaceutical Company in 1887 for $5,000.00 and incorporated on 12/13/1887 as Bristol, Myers Company.  In 1899 after Myers’s death the name was changed by replacing the comma with a hyphen.  The company went into the black financially in 1900 and has remained there ever since.
In 1989 Bristol-Myers and Squibb merged forming the second largest pharmaceutical company in the world.
